Owned by the Nelthropp family through eight generations, Cruzan is named after the natives of St. Croix who are known as “crucians”. Originally of English descent, the family moved to Denmark and it was from there that they came to the Caribbean island of St. Croix. When they arrived the island was controlled by the Danes and was covered with sugarcane fields. In the early days, no less than 165 windmills dotted St. Croix, all grinding sugar for shipment to Europe or North America.
Rum has always been an integral part of the island’s culture and Cruzan is an iconic company that honors local customs. Like all early rums, the first Cruzans were distilled in pot stills. Today, a modern five-column continuous still makes the wonderfully clean rum, free from impurities and heaviness. Cruzan is famous for the smoothness of its rums.
