Specifics: The remarkable saga of Spaniard (Sitges, Catalonia, Spain) Don Facundo Bacardi Maso and his descendants is the story of a large portion of the modern rum industry itself. After landing in Cuba in the 1800s, Don Facundo became a wine merchant. With a talent for blending, he created a lighter style of rum by introducing column stills to Cuba. Soon, his light and gently sweet rums were the talk of the Caribbean region.
In 1958, the family fled Cuba’s political instability and established headquarters in Puerto Rico. One of the region’s most environmentally conscious companies, Bacardi’s San Juan distillery is a prototype of efficiency and conservation. Today, Bacardi is the world’s largest rum producer.
